Samsung SDI Partakes in InterBattery Europe 2023 to Showcase Sustainable Energy with PRiMX & BoT

□ Debuts Samsung Battery Box (SBB), a battery storage solution with the most competitive capacity to the world for the first time

□ Displays the next-gen lineup encompassing all solid-state batteries, NMX, LFP, 46-phi batteries

Samsung SDI today announced that it is participating in InterBattery Europe 2023 held in Munich, Germany, for three days from June 14 to 16.

With its vision 'To make the world greener and sustainable through our innovative technology,' the company showcased flagship products under the theme of “Sustainable Energy PRiMX & BOT.”

The company, in particular, presented differentiating battery technologies through exhibition of the expanding lineup of Battery of Things solutions under its proprietary brand PRiMX.

InterBattery Europe 2023 is part of The Smarter E-Europe, the largest energy industry exhibition in the European market. This year’s The Smarter E-Europe embraces over 2,200 ESS businesses from about 150 countries and Samsung SDI marked its ninth participation in the biggest energy show in Europe.

As its showrunner in Munich, Samsung SDI showcased Samsung Battery Box (SBB), which made its first debut in the global scene. SBB is an energy storage solution encasing battery cells and modules for an energy storage system in a single box. It becomes operable when connected to an electrical grid, allowing for more flexible application.

Housing the highest-capacity battery cells for ESS solutions, Samsung Battery Box is a representation of Samsung SDI’s unrivalled technologies in battery materials as it is built with high-nickel NCA cathodes featuring highly reliable performance and safety well-attested in the electric vehicle market. This technology also worked to improve the battery capacity by more than 30% compared to the previous lineup.

The total capacity that one SBB can hold is 3.84MWh, the top level performance in the ESS industry. Considering a single household in Europe consumes averaged 10kWh per day, a Samsung Battery Box can supply electricity for four hundred households for one day. Adding to SBB’s unmatched performances are E5S modules and racks equipped with a direct injection system that ensures the highest level of safety and a water cooling system that features the enhanced thermal management.

In PRiMX & BoT Zone, Samsung SDI presented a range of battery technologies including all solid-state batteries and next-gen line-ups as a leader of the battery industry. The all solid-state battery product stood out with a longer battery life achieved by the company’s proprietary solid electrolyte and anode-less technologies. The company is poised to see the completion of a pilot production line for all solid-state batteries and the start of a prototype production this year and plans on taking on a myriad of tests to ensure the completeness of the solid-state battery development.

In addition to displaying their battery products that power electric cars, IT and wearable devices, power tools and ESS, it was the first time that Samsung SDI showcased lineups that are increasingly grabbing the market’s focus: nickel manganese batteries (NMX), lithium ion phosphate batteries (LFP), and 46-phi cylindrical batteries.

Earlier, Samsung SDI announced it planned on entering the markets of entry-level EVs and utility ESS and would achieve the target by expanding its product portfolio into cobalt-free batteries such as NMX and LFP. A pilot production line for 46-phi cylindrical batteries is scheduled to be completed soon in Cheonan and begin a sample production in the third quarter at the earliest.

Visitors to Samsung SDI’s Sustainability Zone in InterBattery Europe 2023 could also have a glimpse into the sustainable future that Samsung SDI is shaping via video clips illustrating the battery's role in the environment protection and Samsung SDI's actions for a better future marked by life-cycle assessment of batteries.

“Samsung SDI is making the utmost efforts to gain a technological edge that can realize the sustainable energy,” said Jooyoung Go, executive vice president for marketing at the Automotive & ESS Battery Business at Samsung SDI. “We will endeavor to deliver even more innovative and advanced battery lineups to set ourselves as a true market leader.”
