Beyond the naked eye, there is an underlying
power of digital transformation

Samsung SDI Electronic Materials is creating a more convenient digital world with our advanced materials for
products including TVs, semiconductors, smartphones and even next-generation products like OLED displays,
rechargeable batteries and much more.

Electronic Materials Business

Business Status

Increasing market power with our high-end technology and specialized business competence In 1994, Samsung SDI took the first step into the field of electronic material business by developing EMC, an encapsulant for the semiconductor. We have been strengthening our competence toward the world top level with our advanced technology and specialized capability spanning from the materials of semiconductor and display to the rechargeable battery and PV battery. Especially, we kept making an investment in R&D on the materials for OLED, a promising display in recent years. Thus we started mass production of ETL (Electron Transport Layer) in 2013 and later in 2014 we succeeded in developing PGH(phosphorescence green host), an OLED emission layer material by our own technology. In addition, we are focusing to the business field of PV Paste which is used for a separator of the rechargeable battery which can be said a heart of IT devices, as well as the solar battery - eco-friendly and renewable energy storage. Such efforts lead to financial achievement: our business has been growing since we started in 1994, and five of our products including SOH and SOD are now ranked global top three according to the 2014 market share. We are still endeavoring to raise those five products to the world’s number one.
Furthermore, we will devote ourselves for unceasing growth by precedently penetrating promising markets with, for example, the flexible display which is expected to be used for next-generation mobile devices, and by closely collaborating with our global partners.

  • * EMC: packaging materials to protect semiconductor circuits from external environments, including moisture, heat, and shock
  • * SOH: helps circuit to transfer properly to desired membrane for micro patterns
  • * SOD: materials to insulate between different areas or layers inside of a semiconductor device

Business plan

Samsung SDI aims to solidify its market dominance in existing markets by launching differentiated products based on cutting-edge technologies. In addition, we will focus on technology competitiveness and marketing competence to gain a competitive edge in the promising next-generation markets.

As for rechargeable battery separators and OLED materials, Samsung SDI will extend its business as the smartphone and wearable device market and premium TV market are expected to grow continuously. In addition, We also plan to build a system to provide flexible display materials in a timely manner to lead the next-generation mobile device market.

Highlights

Started producing PGH, high value-added material for OLED

Samsung SDI’s Gumi plant commenced mass-production of PGH (phosphorescence green host), a key material for the OLED emission layer, since April 2014. PGH is a core material producing green light in the emission layer, and about two years since development began in 2012, we successfully developed our own PGH technology and began mass-production for the first time in Korea. The new PGH material will be applied to a wide range of digital devices including smartphones.

Samsung SDI signed an MOU with China’s Wuxi city for building Polarizer Plan

Former Samsung SDI CEO Cho Namseong and Party Secretary Li Xiaomin at Pullman Hotel in the city of Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, signed a memorandum of understanding on the construction of a polarizing film plant. Polarizing films, attached to LCD panels, control brightness, contrast and other optical features by either blocking or letting pass light coming from the Back Light Unit. Polarizers are used in a wide range of display devices including not only LCD TVs but also laptop computers, tablet PC, and smartphones. Samsung SDI plans to invest around 200 billion KRW to build a polarizer production line on the site located in Wuxi Industrial District with the annual capacity of 30~40 million square meters, aiming to start mass production at the end of the next year.
