    A pure electric vehicle is powered only by an electric motor from a battery without an internal combustion engine, which does not create any gas emissions at all. The battery is the only source to propel the wheels so higher energy density within given space is always favorable.
    Samsung SDI is currently supplying the industry’s highest volumetric energy density battery cell to EU and US automakers.
    The development direction at Samsung SDI for EV applications is to increase energy density within current vehicle and battery system package designs - no external dimensional change will be required to drive over 300km for pure electric vehicles. Samsung SDI is designing an optimized battery by adopting higher specific capacity active material with a desirable life performance, controlling the particle size distribution of active materials to achieve high electrode density and also by introducing new mechanical components innovation.

    Just like EV applications, our standardized PHEV battery cell format enables the increased driving range for PHEV applications in the same external dimensions, so the vehicle can run over 50km on the electric mode without having to change the current packaging for next generations. From everyday road cars that require durability at a reasonable price to high-performance sports sedans, Samsung SDI is producing PHEV batteries for various purposes to prepare for the market mainstream.

    A hybrid vehicle uses an internal combustion engine and electric motor to maximize energy efficiency and minimize environmental pollution. Mainly it is powered by an engine for general driving, and battery assists when extra power is needed.
    HEV battery undergoes life stress from frequent charges and discharges but needs to extend its power assistant duration for a better mileage. Samsung SDI’s HEV batteries are designed for high-power with the leading ratio of energy output to help maximize the fuel efficiency and last for a long period of time.

    The Micro-/Mild hybrid electric vehicle is the next version of an internal combustion engine car with start/stop systems which combines advantages of a stop/start and hybrid vehicle by keeping the voltage power supply below 60V on board. 12V/48V low voltage battery for the Micro-/Mild HEV will offer automakers a potential for responding to the ever stricter CO2 emission standards at a minimum cost - thus providing an intermediate solution on a way towards vehicle electrification. Vehicles with a supplementary 12V power supply offer an advanced start/stop function and the 48V battery provides additional powertrain features like power assist.
    12V and 48V low voltage batteries require a high-rate charger and a long-cycle life at low temperature. Samsung SDI has developed its unique battery cell, named “Hi-Cap (Highly Intercalating Capacitor)" with its power close to that of condensers and its durability significantly enhanced compared to the conventional lithium-ion battery cell. Samsung SDI's low voltage batteries with “Hi-Cap” cells help maximize fuel saving potential with its excellent cold cranking and recuperation capabilities.
