Display became one of the necessity of our daily life for the modern people as they see the world through various displays such as TV, computer, mobile phone and so on. 

Features of display

Display is consisted of various kinds of layers that operate the LCD and OLED panel depending on the types of models. They are CR (Color Resist) that materializes the RGB colors, films (Polarizing film, prism sheet etc.) and ACF (Anisotropic Conductive Film) which is the circuit contact material, and Samsung SDI is manufacturing CR, ACF, OLED etc.

Polarizing Film which is the core material of display makes the screen clear and distinct by adjusting the direction of light. Polarizing Film has different role in LCD and OLED panel and 2 films will be used for LCD. As a role of digital shutter, one film allows the desired part of light generated from the front of Back Light Unit pass through it, and as an another shutter, the other one is applied on the most outside of the panel and allows the light pass through the LCD in one direction. Since there is no back light on OLED, only one Polarizing Film will be used on the most outside of the panel to prevent the reflection of light.

Because of this reason, Polarizing Film is an important material for display and it covers approx. 10% of the display panel production cost. In accordance with the information of the market investigation organization, HIS, 10 billion dollars of global Polarizing Film market is formed in 2014.

Polarizing Film business of Samsung SDI

Samsung SDI took over ACEDIGITECH Co., Ltd. and started Polarizing Film business in 2007. ACEDIGITECH started from small products lines but they expanded the third line for the TV products in 2010, and they supplied the Polarizing Films for mobile phone, tablet, monitor and TV to the LCD finished goods manufacturers in Korea such as Samsung etc.

In the meantime, Samsung SDI merged ACEDIGITECH and included it into the Chungju business place for the sake of effectiveness, and focused on the reorganization of the product portfolio and intensified the business competitiveness and market controllability. As a second mover Samsung SDI experienced difficulties at the initial stage of business, but finally raised the production yield and operation rate to the global company level.

"Durability Up, Price Down!" World first PET applied Polarizing Film

Samsung SDI developed the world first technology and replaced TAC, the core material of Polarizing Film, to PET in 2013 and applied them to the TV products.

TAC film is the material used for the film cameras before and the price is rather expensive. In the meantime, since the customers want to ship the products in panel state instead of completed TV product by boat, Samsung SDI need to develop the product that has better moisture resistance for the longer time transportation over the sea. 

In this situation, Samsung SDI reviewed the use of competitive universal high molecule film (namely, PET) to solve this problem and finally developed the PET Polarizing Film that has moisture resistance and competitiveness. The success of product development with better performance and competitiveness made it possible to give differentiation onto the product. Most of all, PET type Polarizing Film has outstanding performance comparing to the TAC with 1/60 of vapor permeance (the moisture penetrating rate). This film is currently applied to 32~55 inch TV and is planned to be applied other types of displays such as monitors etc.
