This time, Samsung SDI exhibited its products that implemented world’s top class safety technology, together with various batteries for electric cars spanning from sell to module and pack including fast-charging cell, standard type module and cylindrical cell. □ Those products of Samsung SDI have been developed with its world’s top class safety technologies including overcharging prevention, insulation structure that blocks electrical contact from outside, overheat prevention and temperature control.Especially, Samsung SDI’s battery production lines for electric car are being operated by MEM (Manufacturing Execution System), which benchmarked world’s top-level semiconductor manufacturing technology of Samsung Electronics.By means of MES, Samsung SDI manages production and quality history of its whole products, creating the same legend of “Zero recall” in the field of electric car batteries, as we have achieved it in the field of small-sized battery for IT devices.Samsung SDI’s high-speed charging cell is the industry’s top level product, high-powered and long-lasting cell that no performance degradation occurs even after repetitive charging as fast as 80% within 30 min. This is particularly for the commercial car makers who wish to make it possible to quickly charge the car in a short lunch time and drive in the afternoon. This product can maximize the utilization of electric cars for it enables two successive operations in the morning and in the afternoon.Reducing the charging as well as extending the driving distance is one of the most competitive technologies in the battery industry. Car makers are asking battery companies for developing faster charging cells. Therefore, current release of high-speed charging cells will give more opportunity for Samsung SDI to obtain orders.Samsung SDI exhibited various types of cells and modules including 37Ah, 50Ah, 94Ah, 120Ah, and more. 50Ah cell has improved capacity by 35% compared to 37Ah cell, and 120Ah by 28% compared to 94Ah. In particular, 37Ah and 50Ah cells, and 94Ah and 120Ah cells are applied the same standard type modules, respectively. Standardizing module type makes it easy to standardizing car design, so it’s an advantageous feature.Usually a module consists of 12 battery cells tied together in a row, so applying 50Ah and 120Ah cells to the existing module design allows development of electric cars with extended driving distance, greatly saving development cost. In this respect, it attracts high attention of many car makers.In addition to prismatic type, Samsung SDI also displayed cylindrical batteries, of which Samsung SDI, the world’s top company in the field of small-size battery for IT devices, is holding unrivaled competitiveness. EV companies in China have been adopting more cylindrical batteries recently.Samsung SDI released ’18650 cell’ (18mm in diameter, 65mm in height) together with ’21700 cell’ (21mm in diameter, 70mm in height) that has increased energy capacity by maximum 35%, showing its advanced technology.□ China is now leading the development of global electric car market. According to the research institute like HSBC, 330,000 electric cars (EV and PHEV) were sold in China last year, increased by more than 240% compared to 2014. ◇ Initiatives for Joint Entry into Overseas New Energy Businesses between KEPCO and Samsung SDI ◇ President of KEPCO, Cho Hwan-Eik, said, “The MOU this time will serve as the cornerstone for assault on the global market.” ◇ President of Samsung SDI, Cho Nam Seong, said, “The strengths of both companies will be combined to produce the synergy effect.”□ Samsung SDI embarks on the assault on the global ESS market under the cooperation with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). On April 19th, Samsung SDI and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) executed the MOU (memorandum of understanding) for business cooperation in the field of ESS. The gist of the MOU this time is that if KEPCO discovers the overseas electricity business model, Samsung SDI will supply the batteries and when Samsung SDI tenders bids for ESS projects solicited by major overseas power generating companies, it will cooperate with KEPCO as the partner for the project implementation. In the coming years, Samsung SDI and Korea Electric Power Corporation (referred to as “KEPCO” hereafter) will cooperate with each other in a diversity of fields that utilize ESS. In particular, the two companies will integrate their business capabilities for reciprocal support of related projects such as the smart home, farm, factory and town projects and the energy internet project and they also plan to make joint progress of the export projects for the overseas MV(Medium Voltage) ESS’s in North America, Southeast Asia and other areas, frequency regulation ESS’s and the ESS’s associated with renewable energy. Samsung SDI will particularly supply the batteries optimized for each type of projects. At the signing ceremony the day, president of KEPCO, Cho Hwan-Eik, said, “Samsung SDI will find the opportunity to establish its solid position as a global leader in the field of ESS by way of this MOU,” stressing, “The MOU executed this time will serve as the cornerstone for targeting the global new energy market well beyond the domestic boundary.” Meanwhile, Samsung SDI has already been recognized for its technological capabilities through a number of domestic and overseas ESS projects. In March last year, Samsung SDI executed the MOU for the joint development and sales of the ESS solutions for micro-grids (independent power generating network on a smaller scale) with ABB from Switzerland, a global leading company in electric facilities, and in July it executed a contract for supply of ESS’s with Duke Energy, the largest power generation company in North America. In addition, the frequency regulation (FR) ESS which commenced operation for the first time in the country at Shinyongin Substation in July last year and the ESS’s for micro-grids established across the nation were the result of cooperation between Samsung SDI and KEPCO. The experience of successful implementation of these projects to date is expected to serve as the fertile ground for the cooperation between Samsung SDI and KEPCO in the coming years. ◇ The company unveiled the prototype of world’s top high energy density battery cell for EVs that enables to drive for 600 kilometers by charging once at the 2016 Auto Show held in Detroit◇ The ‘low height pack’ with reduced battery size is expected to establish platform for EV systems◇ The ‘LVS solution’ aims at the North American market with eco-friendliness and economic efficiency □ SEOUL, South Korea--Samsung SDI (President: Nam Seong Cho), a global leading company in the lithium-ion battery industry, introduced the prototype of battery cell for electric vehicles (EVs) that delivers world’s top energy density. Samsung SDI began to make foray into the North American automobile market by introducing a variety of customized battery products at the 2016 North American International Auto Show opened on January 11, 2016 at Cobo Center in Detroit, the United States. New battery products include the prototype of high energy density battery cell for EVs that enables them to drive for up to 600 kilometers by charging once, ‘low height pack’ and ‘low voltage system (LVS)’ for EVs. The prototype of new high energy density battery cell for EVs is the world’s top EV battery cell that improved energy density and driving distance by 20~30% compared to cells that enable EVs to drive for 500 kilometers, which are currently being provided in samples. The commercial production of this high energy density battery cell is expected to start in 2020. Samsung SDI also unveiled ‘low height packs’ for EVs that significantly reduced the battery size and ‘LVS solutions’ that enable regular vehicles to improve eco-friendliness and fuel efficiency simultaneously.Being a compact battery whose height is 20~30% lower than existing packs for EVs, the ‘low height pack for EVs’ is reduced in size while enhancing energy density. The reduction in height and improvement in energy density will allow EV designers to install packs more easily and to make commercial production while reducing costs, expediting establishment of platform for EV systems.And the new ‘LVS solution’ can be installed in regular vehicles as well as EVs. As a low voltage system that can replace a lead-acid battery with a lithium-ion battery or add to it in regular vehicles, the ‘LVS solution’ features economic value by delivering excellent eco-friendliness and fuel efficiency. While the issue of environment pollution by vehicle emissions is being raised, the ‘LVS solution’ attracts attention as a means of addressing environmental regulations to control carbon dioxide as it can improve fuel efficiency by 3~20%. Thus the ‘LVS solution’ is increasingly drawing keen interest and demand from consumers and automakers particularly in North America. □ Samsung SDI aims to further sharpen competitive edge by capitalizing on its plant in Xian, China, which was built last year, and synergy with SDIBS based on its industry-top cell and module technologies. To that end, the company plans to aggressively cope with diverse specifications and needs of global automakers by setting up a full lineup of products, including high voltage systems such as high energy density battery cells and compact battery packs, and LVS packs. “We aim to lead the era of popularizing EVs by introducing a variety of solutions and products desired by customers and the market at this auto show,” said President Nam Seong Cho of Samsung SDI. “Particularly, we will accelerate to make foray into the global automobile market including North America by providing the new high energy density battery cell based on the world’s top technology leadership as well as the low height packs and LVS solutions.”
