FAQ

What is the protection circuit included in the Li-ion battery pack?
The protection circuit is a device for ensuring the safe operation of a battery cell in case of inappropriate usage of a battery pack. The protection circuit mostly protects the cell from being damaged by overcharge, over discharge, over current, and short circuit
Can you make a battery pack customized for our product?
We produce various types of battery packs customized to the needs of the customers, in addition to the mass-produced battery packs. If you have any further questions, please contact us at battery@samsung.com.

What are some of the devices that may adopt Li-ion batteries?
Li-ion battery may be used quite extensively. Its use is quickly expanding, from small IT devices (such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and power banks) to power tools, small electric appliances (cordless vacuum cleaners), E-bikes, garden tools, E-scooters, emergency power supplies, and medical devices.
How are prismatic, cylindrical, and polymer type Li-ion batteries different?
Prismatic and cylindrical type batteries are fundamentally the same in terms of their function. The biggest difference between a prismatic and a cylindrical type is the shape and size of the encasing. A cylindrical battery has a cylindrical steel case, and features high capacity and energy density, and an excellent C-rate discharge. On the other hand, a prismatic battery is encased with rectangular aluminum and features a slim shape and high energy density.
In a polymer battery, the electrolyte that enables the movement of lithium ion is a polymer. A polymer battery is ultra-slim and characterized by its outstanding size flexibility, and it can be used to produce batteries with various sizes.
What are the advantages of the Li-ion battery over other secondary batteries?
The Li-ion battery has seven major advantages as follows :
1) High Energy DensityLi-ion batteries have higher energy density, which allows them to be made approximately half the weight of and about 20-50 percent smaller and lighter in volume than the existing Ni-Cd or Ni-MH batteries of the same capacity.
2) No Memory EffectLi-ion batteries have no memory effect, which occurs in Ni-Cd and Ni-MH batteries from repeated charging and discharging. The capacity of Li-ion batteries is not reduced by frequent charging up to a certain level.
3) Environmentally Friendly BatteryNi-Cd and Ni-MH batteries contain heavy metals that are hazardous to human bodies. Specifically, Ni-Cd batteries include cadmium, and lead-acid batteries use lead as its main material. This leads to the risk of heavy metal contamination not only during the battery manufacturing process but also after it is discarded. In contrast, Li-ion batteries are relatively environmentally friendly since they contain no cadmium, lead, mercury, or other heavy metals.
4) High Voltage Li-ion batteries can generate about three times as much high voltage as Ni-Cd or Ni-MH batteries. This helps reduce the number of batteries used, and the manufacture of smaller and lighter electronic devices.
5) Fast Charging Li-ion batteries can also be charged much faster than lead-acid batteries. Typically, they charge approximately three times faster than lead-acid batteries.
6) Long Life CycleNickel-based batteries or lead-acid batteries have shorter life cycle than Li-ion batteries because of frequent charging and discharging. This results in inconvenience and cost due to frequent battery replacement. However, Li-ion batteries are more advantageous in terms of the total cost since they can undergo at least 500 cycles of charging and discharging.
7) High Storage CharacteristicsTypically, battery capacity gradually decreases because of self-discharge during long periods of storage. Lead-acid batteries retain only 60 percent of the initial capacity after a year of storage. However, Li-ion batteries are excellent in terms of self-discharge over a long period, as they maintain about 93 percent of their initial capacity after a year.
What does a Pack in a Lithium-ion battery mean?

A Pack is a battery or a battery combination in which cells are arranged in series/parallel according to the customers’ request or cells are composed to be installed/ inserted easily in order to satisfy various electric power consumption.

How is a secondary battery different from primary battery?

□ Primary Battery : battery which can be used for one time only (non-reusable)

It includes Hg battery, Lithium-Mn battery, Alkaline battery, etc.
□ Secondary Battery : battery which can be reused through the processes of discharging (chemical energy converts into electrical energy) and charging (the opposite procedure)

It includes Ni-Cd battery, Ni-H battery, Lithium- ion battery and Lithium-ion polymer battery, etc.

What are the major differences between a prismatic and cylindrical type Lithium-ion batteries?
Both prismatic and cylindrical type batteries have same operating mechanism basically. Prismatic type is usually used for mobile devices and its general capacity is 500~1200mAh; whereas cylindrical type is mostly used for Notebook PC and camcorders and has 1600~2400mAh capacity which is higher than prismatic type. Detailed comparison between the two types is specified in Product Information.
Are the batteries of your company sold to general consumers as well?

Since the batteries are designed according to the using environment of the set makers and to be used by the Pack unit; only set makers can buy the batteries

Can a battery be used longer if it is kept in a cool area such as refrigerator?

A battery is to be kept in a place of low temperature and low humidity as a rule; however, a refrigerator is rather humid so the Lithium-ion battery which has instable property against moisture could be put in a danger.

Is Lithium-ion the only dangerous battery?
All batteries are dangerous to some extent, and Lithium-ion batteries can be the most dangerous products; however, you can use them safely thanks to the safety apparatus attached to them.
How is Lithium-ion different from Lithium-ion Polymer?

It depends on the state of the electrolyte (liquid/ polymer) which makes the Lithium ions transfer.

Lithium-ion usually adopts aluminum cans to sustain the flammable active materials of the battery securely since it includes liquid state electrolyte; while Lithium Polymer uses Polymer state electrolyte which is more stable than Lithium-ion electrolyte and covers the external parts with Laminated film.

What is Cell Impedance?
Inner Cell resistance is related to the maintaining of the current flow. If the resistance is high, voltage drop during discharge can occur which can affect the equipment.
