What is the relationship between Samsung SDI and Semiconductors, the “Sorcerer’s Stone”?

What comes to your mind when you hear the words ”sorcerer’s stone”?
Other than “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”, there is another ”sorcerer’s stone” around us.
They are the semiconductors which are widely used in electronics.

Semiconductors are almost in all kinds of electronics we use every day.

As they have granted the humanity the use of electronic devices, they are also known as the “sorcerer’s stone”.

First, let’s start with the definition of a semiconductor.

* What is a Semiconductor?

The word comes from half (semi) + conductor as its properties fall between that of a “conductor” and a “nonconductor”.

It is used for a variety of purposes depending on its properties as they can be modified by heat • light • voltage • current.

This circular plate which pops into our mind when we think of the word “semiconductor’” is called a “wafer”.

The sliced chips from the wafer play the role of a semiconductor.

* Wafer: The main ingredient used for the formation of the semiconductor integrated circuits.

It is a thin round plate created by growing mostly silicon (Si) or Gallium arsenide (GaAs).

* Semiconductors in our daily life

 1. Data processing: For calculation and storage of data

 2. Telecommunications: For corded handsets and mobile phones at home or work

 3. Home appliance: For tablet PCs and game consoles

 4. Automobile: For the basic function of an automobile such as starting up an engine

How did these semiconductors become an essential element of our lives? Aren’t you curious?

Shall we move on to learn how semiconductors are manufactured?

■ Semiconductor Manufacturing Process

Semiconductors are manufactured according to the following process:

[Semiconductor Manufacturing Process]

The materials used for the entire manufacturing processes of a semiconductor chip are called “semiconductor process materials”,

and they are divided into 2 types: materials for the front-end, and materials for the back-end semiconductor production process.

* Front-end process: The operation of wafer fabrication, and circuit engraving on wafers (patterning)

* Back-end process: The operation of cutting each circuit on the wafer board, attaching wires that allow external connections,

and assembling them into a final product (packaging)

■ Semiconductor Patterning (Front-end) Materials: SOH, SOD, CMP Slurry

* Patterning: Creating an integrated circuit inside a semiconductor chip through the process of repeated thin film etching

* Etching: Preserving only the desired area on the wafer and removing all the unwanted materials

   using chemical solutions or gas

# Spin On Hardmask (SOH)

Samsung SDI started producing SOH and SOD, which are semiconductor patterning materials, from 2005 and 2009 respectively.

SOH is an auxiliary material used to form semiconductor micro patterns and it has the property of flattening by filling in gaps.

Samsung SDI’s SOH, as a material used in a new coating method of a semiconductor pattern development process,

forms a layer not through the existing deposition method but by spin coating, and this greatly improves the line width pattern accuracy.

* Deposition: The method of heating a metal at high temperatures so that it evaporates and is condensed by the vapor

* Spin Coating: The procedure of dropping a coating material on a wafer and spinning it at a high speed

in order to make it spread creating a thin layer

# Spin On Dielectrics (SOD)

SOD is a coating material applied during the thin silicon film production process.

It serves as an insulator between semiconductor transistors to prevent interference.

For inter-transistor insulation, patterns become narrow during the gap filling up process.

SOD functions as a material for the Spin Coating process replacing the conventional CVD process.

Samsung SDI has developed an SOD material which is largely improved in bubble defect.

* Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) Process: The process of growing films such as silicon films

on the surface of wafers through chemical reactions

# Chemical-Mechanical Polishing Slurry (CMP)

CMP Slurry is an abrasive which is used to smoothen the surface of wafers and flatten the unnecessarily created thin film

on the surface of the wafers during the formation of stackable circuits and micro patterns of semiconductors.

Due to the shifting trend towards semiconductor micro patterns, this type of slurry is receiving much more attention.

[The process of flattening the surface of a wafer with CMP Slurry]

Samsung SDI’s CMP Slurry is suitable for new technologies as it minimizes scratches, increases surface flatness and is highly abrasive.

■ Semiconductor Packaging (Front-end) Material: EMC

To protect something important, we often use strong protective equipment.

For digital devices, the most important parts are circuits and chips which transmit and receive signals.

Therefore, materials which are used in the packaging of finalized wafers should be high-performing,

highly integrated advanced materials that adapt well to trend shifts towards ultra-small, ultra-thin and low-power technologies.

Let us introduce Samsung SDI’s the semiconductor packaging material.

# Epoxy Molding Compound (EMC)

EMC is a thermoset molding compound that effectively protects semiconductor devices from the external environment

such as moisture, shock, heat, and electric charges. In plain language,

it is like clothing that protects the internal parts of a semiconductor.

[EMC Injection Process]

Before the 1960’s, the main ingredient used to make protective packaging for semiconductors were metal or ceramic.

But today, many manufactures prevalently use epoxy resin-EMC because they are affordable and easy to shape.

Samsung SDI started producing EMC since 1994. Since then SDI’s EMC is well recognized for its superior quality and technology.

Semiconductors are truly the “sorcerer’s stone” exercising their magical powers in not only home appliances

but in a variety of products of our daily life such as computers, communication devices and automobiles!

Please keep in mind and never forget that these semiconductors contain Samsung SDI’s semiconductor process materials!
