Environmentally Conscious Design

Product Development Through Life Cycle Thinking

Samsung SDI uses life cycle thinking in designing environment-friendly products from product planning, development, and design phases. The concept of environment is incorporated into existing quality, cost, and delivery concept. Though Samsung SDI is not an end-product maker, it considers end-users’ product use and disposal when making products. To comply with RoHS, WEEE, and EuP, Samsung SDI refined internal work processes to be aligned with PDCA. All products to be produced by Samsung SDI will go through eco-design. And eco-profile is automatically calculated by a computing system in the mass production phase.

Life Cycle Assessment

LCA is assessment of a product's impact on environment throughout its life cycle from collecting raw materials to recycling after being disposed.

Samsung SDI collects environment information of parts, runs LCA for parts, and analyzes recycling rate. To address potential inaccuracy of part information, Samsung SDI built a system (for hybrid LCA) to additionally conduct IO LCA by making use of inter-industry relations table. It also performs material-based LCA with input from suppliers on energy/utility requirements for parts that Samsung SDI buys, emissions, transportation mode and travel distance between the supplier to destinations within Samsung SDI.

To assess environmental impact of manufacturing processes, Samsung SDI uses BOM data from cost account system and energy/utility usage data from e-Energy system. With waste emission to air and water from EMS system of SMIS, Samsung SDI can perform cradle-to-gate LCA.

Eco-Design

Samsung SDI continually develops the ecological property of the product based on the evaluation items of the 3 categories (reducing hazardous material/ resource consumption/ energy) in general according to the eco-product design business procedure.

Samsung SDI will continuously improve environmental aspect of products according to each evaluation item of three major categories(reduction of use of hazardous substances, resources consumption reduction, energy consumption reduction), upon implementing product development process in accordance with environmental product design regulations.

Product Environmental Index Management

Samsung SDI formulate SDI Eco-Efficiency after anayzing the as-is level by product and used it from 2008.
