Energy Storage System(ESS)

An energy storage system (ESS) is a device that stores electricity when the demand is low and provides stored electricity when the demand is high. This improves energy efficiency and stabilizes operations of the electricity grid.
In smart grid and renewable energy applications, where energy efficiency and reliable power supplies are critical, an energy storage system (ESS) is an essential device, and the demand for these devices is increasing.

Smart Grid
A Smart Grid is an electric power network combined with information technology (IT). Smart Grids provide a two-way, real-time information exchange of electricity demand and improves the energy efficiency of electrical power. A Smart Grid is composed of IT such as a Smart Meter and a network, and power-related products such as residential photovoltaics (PVs), smart appliances, electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructures and energy storage systems (ESSs). An ESS is installed in a Smart Grid to quickly optimize power quality and efficiency using information such as real-time power demand and supply rates.
Renewable Energy Storage
The quality of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power largely depends on the weather. The efficiency of the power supplied by these renewable energy sources can be maximized when paired with an energy storage system. Efficient renewable energy storage offered by Samsung SDI's ESS can store a large amount of power from a renewable energy source when it is sunny or windy; the energy is stored in the energy storage system and is available for later use during cloudy or windless conditions.

ESS Storage System Application

Energy storage system applications are classified according to power, energy capacity, usage time, etc. Applications include megawatt-scale power storage for frequency regulations, large capacity energy storage (MWh scale) for peak time demand response, and residential energy storage with medium capacity (kWh scale).
