Acquiring various flexible battery technology In these days, interest in wearable devices is growing rapidly. Recent innovations of healthcare band, smartwatch, and glass help us to see the growth potential of the flexible battery. In November 2014, Samsung SDI unveiled the world’s first flexible battery which is not only bendable but also rollable. Applying our own technologies including flexible structure design and material technologies, our flexible battery is so durable that it still works decently after going through tens of thousands of bending test. We are now focusing to improve the technology maturity in order to apply our flexible battery to more various kinds of wearable devices.

Automotive
Battery

Introduction Samsung SDI concentrates on developing battery technology for low-carbon automobiles, working toward our vision in the field of the green and clean energy solution. By developing high-efficiency and high-capacity lithium-ion rechargeable battery and supplying it to the automakers worldwide, we try to minimize harmful emissions such as CO2(carbon dioxide) from existing internal-combustion engine, thereby realizing sustainability through our products that are not only economic but also environment-friendly. We will go on making creative and innovative products with constant R&D efforts. Automotive

Strengthening R&D of materials for rechargeable battery The rechargeable battery market has recently been extended: from mainly containing small-sized batteries to also containing medium-to-large-sized batteries for the automobile. So we focus on developing new technologies that can overcome the limitations of existing materials as we see the increasing significance of ensuring system solution competitiveness such as fast charging technology for electric cars. We now have a plenty of devices using a rechargeable battery and the competition between companies is getting fiercer. So we are putting strengthened R&D efforts on performance improvement of existing materials and on new high-capacity materials as well in order to maximize battery life for application but to reduce its charging time.

ESS

Introduction Samsung SDI promoted the Li-ion ESS business in 2011 on the basis of the world’s top technology for the small-sized lithium-ion rechargeable battery. We have been able to rank the top of the industry just after three years of running the business based on the world’s best stability of our rechargeable batteries resulted from our long endeavor in the small-sized battery business. The fact that batteries we’re using for ESS are identical to those supplied to BMW electric cars can make the quality of our ESS more trustful. In addition, our country-specific optimized solution enabled us to exploit the markets such as electronic and home market in Europe, commercial market in the US and home market in Japan - faster than our competitors. As a result, in the third quarter of 2014, we became the number one provider in the global ESS market with a market share of 23.6% ESS

Expanding and exploiting ESS market As an industry leader, Samsung SDI has tried to dominate the market. We released home products in 2014 which are briskly sold in the European market through our partnerships with Hanwha Q-Cell, Sharp, etc. And we have also made large-scale supply to the demonstration project for frequency regulation(F/R) done by KEPCO. However, we are not complacent about these achievements but still making efforts to intensify our marketing to exploit a new market. For instance, in 2015, we signed an MOU with ABB, a global strategic installation company for developing the micro-grid ESS business, gaining a foothold for a new ESS market.
Another example is an establishment of a joint venture in 2014 with Sungrow, China’s largest PV inverter manufacturer, for business cooperation, laying a foundation for penetrating into the Chinese ESS market.

Electronic
Materials

Introduction Our Electronic Materials Business develops and sells materials used in the field of semiconductors and displays. We keep putting our efforts to strengthen the power in the existing market such as TFT-LCD and at the same time to ensure our leadership in the high-tech material market such as OLED and rechargeable battery separator. Electronic Materials Business timely develops core materials for high-tech IT devices such as semiconductors, displays, and the next-generation energy. Especially we try to develop competitive products of consistent quality with our innovative technologies. In 2014, we developed the high-efficiency electrode paste, the deposition material which makes OLED high-efficient and long-lasting, and the next-generation CR material for high resolution. In 2015, we also strived to take the dominance in the next generation core material market as well as existing markets by developing OLED materials which we have been working on such as the next-generation polarizing film, high luminance CR, etc.
