- Product Overview of Samsung OLED
- OLED:Organic Light Emitting Diode
- OLED is a self light-emitting display: light is generated when current is supplied to the phosphoric or fluorescent organic thin film caused by the combination of electrons and positive holes (at the organic material layer).
- Light-emitting Mechanism
- -Electrons and Holes converged at the Emitting Layer generate excitation with high level of energy,
and after the excitation falls down to the lower energy state, light is created.
-OLED makes use of the property that organic materials illuminate when voltage is supplied. R, G, B can
illuminate according to the organic materials, therefore Full- color can be realized. - Lamination Structure of Organic Material

- Structure and Mechanism of Samsung OLED
- When power is supplied, electrons move and the current begins to flow: Electrons (-) from the Cathode move toward the Emitting Layer by the help of the Electron Transfer Layer, on the other hand, Holes (+: state of electrons released) from the Anode move toward the Emitting Layer by the help of the Hole Transfer Layer.
Electrons and Holes converged at the Emitting Layer of organic materials generate excitation with high level of energy when the excitation falls down to the lower energy state creating light. The color of the light varies according to the organic materials forming the Emitting Layer, and Full color can be represented by each organic material emitting R,G,B colors. - PM vs AM Type

Mechanism- Apply the signals to the horizontal
lines consecutively so that the dots of
the horizontal direction can emit
light line by line consecutively
Therefore, PM type has limited
brightness and resolution
(Number of the horizontal lines)- In AM type, there is thin film transistor
at the intersection of the horizontal
and perpendicular lines to avoid the
disadvantage of 'consecutive radiation'
so that all dots can emit light
simultaneously. - Advantages and Disadvantages
-
By the Driving Method By the Organic Material Passive Active Small molecule Polymer Advantages - Simple process
-Low investment
cost- No brightness
change as the
Row line increment
- Low investment
cost- Longer lifetime and
higher efficiency- No need for vacuum
equipment and
scalable to large
substratesDisadvantages - Brightness
decreases
as the Row line
increment
- High power
consumption- Complex
Processes
- High investment
cost- Equipment cost
and limitation in
substrate size and
resolution due to
shadow mask- Relatively short
lifetime and
lower efficiency
- Product Types of Samsung OLED
- PM Type : Number of the Scan Lines- 200 or less, and usually for small-size displays
- AM Type : Number of the Scan Lines- 200 or more, and usually for mid to large-size displays
