Smart Battery
Intelligent battery in which a special circuit providing current battery data (voltage, current, temperature, etc), battery data (remaining volume, battery condition) which are calculated on the basis of the current battery data, and predictable battery info (remaining time, remaining charging time, battery life span, etc) to HOST (Machine adopting Smart Battery) is installed.
SMBus(System Management Bus)
defines the communication among Smart Battery,Host(PC), and Smart Charger
Data Protocol, Device Address, etc are defined
SBData(Smart Battery Data)
Details of battery data which are managed in Smart Battery. 33 Data are defined according to the Spec.


- Since the battery packs used in a Note-PC decide the state of the battery based on battery voltage and temperature only. Voltage and temperature of a battery vary according to different factors including the volume of the charging/discharging current, atmospheric temperature, and the number of the times of the battery used, etc¡¦, therefore, the battery state estimated on the basis of theses factors cannot be reliable.
- For judging the battery condition is not accurate, optimal charging/discharging cannot be executed, lifecycle of the battery becomes shorter and useful capacity turns out to be wasted. Users frequently complain that the indication of the useful time remaining of the battery is inaccurate.
- For theses reasons, there Smart Battery which senses the battery condition correctly is becoming in the spotlight.


Smart Battery is called Intelligent Battery or Battery Management System, referring the a Battery Pack in which modulated circuit functioning as follows is installed.
Measuring remaining capacity of the battery
estimates the capacity of the charging/discharging current which is to be added to the previously measured/saved value, and the result is saved as remaining run time. Remaining capacity of a battery is used for predicting remaining time to be used and charging status, and is represented to users through small LED attached on the battery pack or the screen of Note-PC. In order to avoid errors of measurement, it executes the modification of the measured values according to charging/discharging current size, atmospheric temperature, and self-discharging by itself, which has much higher reliability compared to the existing method by which battery voltage is measured and remaining capacity is presumed.
Controlling charging
selects an appropriate charging method based on the current battery status and generates signals controlling charging circuit.
Since it can stop the fully charged batteries from beging recharging, the danger of overcharge can be prevented.
Saving Data
saves constantly-changing SBData (Smart Battery Data) including battery capacity, remaining capacity, times of its use (charging), manufacturing data by using Memories such as EEPROM.
Communicating
communicates Data or control signals to NOTE-PC or Charging circuits mainly through SMBus (System Management Bus) method. Smbus is a communication type for other elements (PCMCIA, Backlight, etc) in Note-PC¡¯s which has been applied previously.
